Iced Tea is a term usually made use of in referring to a tea that has been formerly brewed with hot water and then left to cool. A simple truth here is that any of the teas can be iced be it black, white, oolong or green and called ice tea. All teas are made from the Camellia sinensis plant and once ice tea is made out of any of these varieties of tea, it must contain an amount of stimulant content in them. This amount would only depend on the amount previously contained in the tea while it was still newly brewed. It also depends on the quantity of water used in the preparation of the tea and the whole length of time for which the brewing took place.

Another variety of iced tea can be made from herbal leaves with hot water and then left to stand for a while so as to become chilled or added some ice or refrigerated in order to get iced tea. This tea contains no stimulants at all but on a technical basis, it cannot be called tea since it wasn’t made from the leaves of the tea plant.

Preparation Method

Equally, it would also depend on the kind of preparation method used in preparing the iced tea. It could be prepared by adding the leaves of the tea or the tea bags to the cold water and refrigerating afterwards. This is known as cold brewing. Iced tea prepared with the cold brewing process and refrigerated afterwards would possess a less amount of stimulant content in it.

It can also be prepared by pouring hot water over the leaves of the tea and left to refrigerate till iced. Using hot water over cold water, extracts a lot more caffeine from the tea leaves. As such, the preparation method also has a huge role to play in the ice tea caffeine content.

Type of tea

As said before, iced tea can be made by refrigerating any of the tea varieties or by adding some cubes of ice with different flavors and sweeteners. It could be black tea, could be green, white or oolong tea. All these teas have their own amount of caffeine embedded in them during the manufacturing process. The process of brewing it, the preparation method and the amount of ice or chilling carried out only helps in offsetting and watering down its strong nature. If Black tea is being used as iced tea, the tea would be stronger though with the addition of ice cubes or the process of refrigeration, the entire content is watered down thereby reducing its stimulating capabilities. Black tea possesses more stimulating abilities than the other form of teas and with the addition of ice, there would be a drastic reduction in its stimulant levels.

White tea has less content than green tea, that’s like almost half of what can be found in black tea. If white tea is brewed as iced tea, the overall stimulant content reduces after the whole process. Essentially, if its stimulant level was half of what is contained in black tea, then depending on the amount of ice cubes added, the stimulant content would reduce by another half or at least between 30 to 40 percent. The same goes for Green tea prepared as ice tea. Once prepared as iced tea either by cold brewing preparation method or the hot brewing preparation method and ice cubes are added in them, the stimulating content of the tea is reduced depending on the amount of leaves used, amount of water added and the preparation method followed.
